First aid is the help given to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained. Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.
This 2 day short course is intended to enable participants to recognise the symptoms, causes and evidence-based treatments for:
• Depression
• Anxiety disorders
• Psychosis and
• Substance use disorder

It also addresses the possible crisis situations arising from these mental health problems and steps to help. The crisis situations include a person who is:
• Feeling suicidal
• A person having a panic attack
• A person who has had a recent traumatic experience
• A person who is acutely psychotic and perceived to be threatening violence and
• A person who has overdosed

Although crises are dramatic consequences of mental health problems, it is better to intervene early before such crises develop, therefore the emphasis in this course is the need for early intervention for mental disorders as they are developing.
